Chapter 6

December 22nd

“This is not right!” Phil Hudson yells, interrupting the impromptu post-lunch meeting.

Judge Avery nods. “I understand how you feel. And I’m inclined to agree with you.” He throws his hands up in surrender. “But we almost had a catastrophe here. This is a necessary step, at least for the time being.”

“So your answer to keeping us safe,” Phil says with disgust, “is to check our weapons at the door? And if we come under attack while we’re having our lunch?”

“Your concern has been duly noted,” Jon Dawson says from his location at his lunch table.

“Evan Snyder isn’t here to vote,” I yell out, surprising myself at my outburst.

“Doesn’t matter. We had a quorum,” Dawson says.

“Humph,” Kerryanne snorts.

I pat her arm in agreement. What a piece of work Jon Dawson is. A very pregnant lady, one of the family members from the dude ranch lodge, stands up and demands to know who voted for and against the gun ban. The back and forth continues for several minutes. I’m not at all surprised that both women on the council, along with Dawson, voted in favor, while Grandmaster Shane—our martial arts instructor and a leader in our militia—along with rancher Mick Michaelson, voted against the ban.

While I try and pay attention to the conversation, my mind is overwhelmed with the thought of, How could they? How could they not allow us to carry our weapons? Sure, they have what they think is a valid reason. A couple of days ago, the day the girls and I skipped lunch to meet with Sylvia, there was an argument. More than an argument—one guy pulled a gun on another. Thankfully, no one was injured, but that was the catalyst for this new rule. A rule I emphatically disagree with.

While the pregnant lady cited the Second Amendment as a reason for not having this ban, my concern is much more practical. Phoebe’s murderer is still on the loose, there’s the possibility of rogue bears and other predators, and we are smack dab in the middle of the apocalypse. The Second Amendment is the least of our concerns. Personal protection is a necessity. I have no doubt one of the reasons Bakerville is doing so well is because of the gun culture present in Wyoming before the attacks. Not only was the community able to defend itself against attackers several times, but we can provide our own food. A rule like this seems to serve no one.

After the meeting breaks up, Kerryanne and I start walking to the nursery in the basement. Cheyre and the younger children were all encouraged to go there while we met. I’m glad, since the meeting was heated at times.

“So much for thinking we can be safe here,” Kerryanne says. “I guess Gina was right, if they won’t let us protect ourselves.”

“Let’s just wait and see. You heard that they would have a series of meetings and try to sort this out.”

“Yeah, I heard. But I don’t believe them.”

I tilt my head at her.
